Customer Reviews:

Lisbeth Burns (Lsbthburns@aol.com), a long-term fat acceptance activist, December 2, 2002, WONDERFUL FOR A FAT CHILD'S SELF-ESTEEM! I bought this book for my beautiful, chubby 8-year-old neighbor who, at the age of only 7, had become convinced that she was ugly because of her weight, and confided in me that when she looked in a mirror, that's what she thought, and she wanted to die, which absolutely broke my heart. If you could meet this child, you'd understand why. She's so pretty, and talented, sweet, personable, kind, and loving. Being a fat woman myself, I am very liberated, and have a lot of confidence. I was determined to help this wonderful little girl feel better about herself, and had heard about this book, so I came here and bought a copy, and we read it together. Well, she was absolutely thrilled, and thanked me profusely afterwards. She was also tickled pink that Ms. Bogert puts some pages in at the end for the kids to draw on. I told her that, as far as I'm concerned, it's her book, and she can draw anywhere she wants to in it. She walked away with the book tucked under her arm and a big smile on her face, feeling very good about herself. I came back here and bought another copy of it so that, whenever she needs a little boost, we can take out my copy and reread it together. I had a long talk with her family about leaving her alone about her weight (is it really so important that she look "good" in a bathing suit on a cruise at the age of 8? That's how eating disorders begin, for crying out loud!), so I know they got the message, but kids can be cruel, and there's simply no way to avoid that. However, this book can give children the ammunition they need to counter some of that abuse. In the end, what it really does is help children accept themselves as they were meant to be, and that each of us is different. I recommend this for all children, to teach them to be tolerant of everyone.~LFB

S., July 26, 2002, excellent book for all ages. This is a wonderful book for all members of today's 'too thin' society. This book teaches acceptance, something integral to instill in our children while they are still young.
